25th Anniversary American Silver Eagle Coin Set

Updated on December 19, 2011

25th Anniversary Silver Eagle Set

UPDATE: AT APPROXIMATELY ONE TO TWO WEEKS AFTER THE SALE, THESE 25TH ANNIVERSARY AMERICAN SILVER EAGLE SETS ARE SELLING FOR DOUBLE THEIR PURCHASE PRICE, AND NO ONE HAS EVEN HELD THEM IN THEIR HANDS YET. THE MINT HAS NOT SHIPPED THESE YET. THESE HAVE THE POTENTIAL TO SELL FOR $1000 OVER PURCHASE PRICE

Update II - So who is buying the silver eagle sets? The sets are now going to two groups: those who missed out on getting one when they sold out, and those who want to flip them for a profit. The last ASE set peaked in value approximately 12 months after release, and all signs indicate the 25 Anniversary Silver Eagle Set will be more valuable and sought after than the 20th Anniversary.

Update III - Now that I have these sets in hand, it is clear from looking at them that they are more beautiful than I thought they would be. The proof and the reserve proof, right next to each other, look really great.

Why is the American Silver Eagle so Popular?

Since 1986, the United States Mint has produced the official silver bullion coin of the United States government - the Silver American Eagle, or American Silver Eagle (ASE). This silver coin has gained popularity over the years, and has been released in bullion form, proof form, and uncirculated form. Sought after by collectors, the ASE is set to make a big splash when the 25th Anniversary 5-coin set is released.

Most collectors cite the beauty of the ASE as a strong reason for its popularity. As a form of bullion, the ASE has a legal tender value of $1 per one ounce coin, and is backed by the United States government for weight and purity. This makes the coin easy to buy and resell on the open market, and its government backing makes it easier to resell than generic silver rounds minted by private mints.

The obverse image of the ASE was taken from the “Walking Liberty” design by Adolph Weinman, which is likely the most popular coin design in US history, appearing on the half dollar from 1916 to 1947. Many believe it is the most beautiful coin ever minted.

The American Silver Eagle is also eligible for purchase in IRA accounts, but you should first check with your financial advisor or custodian of your IRA to find out the rules and what types of silver are allowed for IRA purchase.

What is Included in the ASE 25th Anniversary Set?

The 25th Anniversary Set totals 5 ounces of pure silver in five separate coins. While the coins may all look the same at first glance, each is unique. The set includes.

  • Uncirculated Coin Version – W (West Point) mint mark
  • Proof Coin Version – W (West Point) mint mark
  • Reverse Proof Coin Version – P (Philadelphia) mint mark
  • Bullion Coin Version – no mint markings
  • Uncirculated Coin Version – S (San Francisco) mint mark

Each set will come in a lacquered hardwood display box and a Certificate of Authenticity

Why Should I Buy the American Silver Eagle 25th Anniversary Set?

While everyone interested will not be buying for the same reasons, there are some common reasons to buy this set:

  • Maximum of 100,000 sets will be minted, possibly fewer
  • Two of the coins, the reverse proof and the uncirculated “S” coin, are not available for individual purchase, making their maximum mintage 100,000
  • Past ASE anniversary sets rapidly increased in value
  • People are already pre-bidding on eBay for more than the sets sell for from the US Mint
  • The coins are beautiful
  • Completing an ASE collection

Should I Buy?

Whether you are looking at an opportunity to make a quick profit or are an American Silver Eagle collector, this set is a must-have. I recommend buying multiple sets, keeping one or two for yourself, and reselling the others for a profit. If you leave them in their unopened US Mint packaging, they will be worth more money.

With Christmas just around the corner, this set will make the perfect gift for the coin or silver bullion enthusiast in your life.

How to Buy?

UPDATE: This set sold out in 4.5 hours, likely a new record for the US Mint. You can try to get on a wait list to take advantage of cancellations, bad credit card numbers, and households who purchased above the limit of 5 per. Good luck!

To purchase, visit the US Mint Website starting on October 27th at 11:00 AM Central Time.
